How's your online catalogue looking? what about your socials? your research guides and online exhibitions?

Like many archives or museums, you probably spend a lot of time on collections discovery (or wish you could spend more).

There's huge strategic opportunity in making the most of content you've already created - your digitisation, research and curation activities - by using Wikipedia.

Find out more from Martin Poulter previously Wikimedian-in-Residence at the Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford and now at the Khalili Foundation.

Martin describes Wikipedia as

both high-traffic and long-term... While social media content is ephemeral, Wikipedia builds over time. And while social media is likely to reach audiences who already know about you and have subscribed to your content, Wikipedia allows for many more serendipitous pathways to discovery, from people interested in things like collections you hold or exhibitions you have put on, who haven’t necessarily heard of you before.

In this interview on Georgina Brooke's Cultural Content substack (always a good read) Martin describes how archives, libraries, museums and galleries can harness significant benefits from using Wikipedia.

The article focusses on exhibitions, but there's lots to learn as it walks you through

  • Uploading exhibition images to Wikimedia Commons
  • How to represent an exhibition within Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons
  • Getting linked from the Wikipedia front page
